[image]Chandra X-ray Image of Trumpler 14, 3-Color - NASA/CXC/PSU/L.Townsley et al.
In this version of Trumpler 14, the colors are coded for energy with red representing low (.35-.79 keV), green medium (.79-.97 keV), and blue high (.97-1.65 keV) energies. The brightest stars are young (about 1 million years old), and much more massive than the Sun. The diffuse X-ray glow is likely due to the combined action of many such winds on a scale of several light years. The bright, diffuse glow in the lower part of the image (the gap between the upper and lower portions of the image on t...

[image]Finely Spun Prominence Eruption - NASA
This eruptive prominence lifted off from the Sun (Sept. 15, 2010) and shows off the strands of plasma in exquisite detail. SDO caught the action in extreme ultraviolet light. Prominences are cooler clouds of gases suspended above the Sun by often unstable magnetic forces. Their eruptions are fairly common, but this one was larger and clearer to see than most.

[image]Chandra X-ray Spectrum of II Pegasi
Chandra was used to measure the neon abundance in 21 Sun-like stars within a distance of 400 light years. The spectrum of one of these objects, II Pegasi, is shown above. The relative amount of neon in these stars was, on average, almost three times more neon than is measured for the Sun, just the amount needed to bring the solar oscillation observations and the theoretical model into agreement. II Pegasi was observed by Chandra on October 17, 1999 for 12 hours...

X-ray data indicate that this cluster formed more than 8 billion years ago and has a mass at least 200 trillion times that of the Sun. It is the most massive cluster ever observed at such an early stage in the evolution of the universe. Scale:

[image]Swirling Plasma - NASA
A dynamic swirling mass of plasma kept spinning above the Sun's surface for over two days (Oct. 27-28, 2010) as SDO observed the action in extreme ultraviolet light. Not to be outdone, a shorter-lived prominence rose up and blew away into space near the upper left edge of the Sun. Together, they make a nice combination of activity on the ever-changing Sun.

[image]The Myth of Icarus - NASA/Marshall Space Flight Center
Ever since humans first saw birds soar through the sky, they have wanted to fly. The ancient Greeks and Romans pictured many of their gods with winged feet, and imagined mythological winged animals. According to the legend of Daedalus and Icarus, the father and son escaped prison by attaching wings made of wax and feathers to their bodies. Unfortunately, Icarus flew too near the sun, and the heat caused the wax and feathers to melt...

This graphic illustrates the wind pattern in a dust devil, and presents the characteristic pressure and wind speed signatures expected if a dust devil were to pass directly over the lander. A dust devil is driven by warm air rising from the surface which is heated by the sun. If one passes over the lander, strong winds are expected first from one direction and then from the opposite direction. Surface pressure should also fall to a minimum at the center of the dust devil.
